The Philharmonic in Szczecin was founded in 1948, and its first concert under the direction of Felicjan Lasota took place on October 25, 1948. The next artistic managers were Marian Obst and Marian Lewandowski, and in 1953 Janusz Cegiełła became the director. In 1958 the philharmonic was named after Mieczysław Karłowicz. While the philharmonic was managed by Józef Wiłkomirski (1957-1977), the number of musicians increased, the repertoire was enriched. During this time, the musicians performed twice at the National Philharmonic and for the first time went on guest performances to Germany. Under the direction of Stefan Marczyk (1977-1993), the orchestra toured abroad, apart from Germany, which has been visited many times, also Bulgaria, Denmark, the Soviet Union and Italy. One of the biggest successes was the performance at the International Music Festival in Assisi in 1983. In 2007, when the design of the new Philharmonic was selected in the international architectural competition. The young Spaniards Estudio Barozzi Veiga won, who proposed an extremely aesthetically economical block. The ice castle, because the object is called so, stood at the intersection of Matejki and Małopolska streets. Exactly in the same place 130 years ago Konzerthaus, i.e. the Concert House, which was the cultural center of former Stettin, inaugurated its activity. The edifice did not survive the turn of fate, but the memory of it remained. The symphony hall, called Słoneczna, is a real masterpiece. Equipped with precise stage solutions, it meets the acoustic standards of the Viennese Musikverein, which acoustics consider to be a benchmark of quality. The fanfare composed especially for the opening of the new building by professor Krzysztof Penderecki was made by Szczecin philharmonics. The inauguration of the new season 2014 in the new building lasted a week. Two concert halls - symphony and chamber - can accommodate a total of over a thousand people.
