Gerhard's Fort in Świnoujście, until recently colloquially known as the Eastern one, is one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century coastal artillery forts in our part of Europe. Built in 1848-1859 by Prussian fortifications, it was one of the four basic defensive works making up the Świnoujście Sea Fortress. The main task of the fort was to defend the port of Świnoujście against the enemy fleet. Gerhard's Fort covers an area of 5 ha, which is surrounded by a wide moat, with over a dozen stone fortifications and a large number of various defensive structures formed from the ground. The structure of the fort is two-story, serving as a barracks and combat role. A crew of 300 people could be in the fort, consisting of walkers and artillerymen. After World War II, taken over by the Russians, used by them until 1962, it was handed over to the city authorities, it was used by them as a warehouse. At that time it was neglected and only after 2001 leased by a group of history lovers is it gradually restored. The fort is available to tourists who are shown around the whole building dressed in Prussian uniforms students. This is one of the few living museums in Europe where tourists can temporarily move in time and experience the taste of military service, including drill. Worth seeing: - the best preserved artillery bench in Europe - a string of stands for coastal cannons - a redoubt - a courtyard with casemates under the artillery gallery - Coastal Defense Museum, including a 37mm revolver cannon, Gatling machine gun - a collection of original uniforms as well as small arms and ammunition from the beginning of the 19th to the mid-20th century - including a rifle from Napoleonic times - a collection of 200 lead soldiers painted with attention to every detail.
