The West Fort built in 1856-61, intended to defend the port against enemy ships, was one of four fortification works erected at the mouth of the Świna. A maximum of 300 soldiers were in the fort: infantrymen and artillerymen. During the Second World War, the Kriegsmarine artillery school was located in Fort. The school's audience created the Kriegsmarine assault company, which was embarked on the battleship "Schleswig Holstein". She was the first to take part in the Westerplatte fights. Since 2004, the facility is open to the public for tourists as a monument of fortification architecture and the fortress museum in Świnoujście. The collection includes many interesting militaria, a collection of old glass and porcelain. In the summer season, antique fairs and military fairs for collectors are organized. It is also a place of artistic and sporting events, e.g. vernissages, the "FAMA" Student Festival or cross-country runs. The West Fort is located in the left bank of Świnoujście on the island of Usedom. Worth seeing: - The defensive gate to which the leve once led. In the gate walls, shooting holes for small arms. - Square redoubt - the oldest part of the fort - now used as a museum for the history of the fortress. - Underground communication corridor with former ammunition chambers and storage rooms. At the foot of the corridor round holes of 19th-century ammunition lifts are visible. - Artillery fire stations from the second half XIX century under the middle earth rampart and on the wings of the terrace. - Concrete battery control shelter "Henningsen" with staff rooms and an optical rangefinder stand. - Artillery gallery with stands for heavy coastal cannons from the nineteenth century. The central cannon preserved in its original condition. On the right one of the "Henningsen" battery fire stations. In the center and on the left wing of the fort, Russian shelters for coastal cannons.
