The fortifications of Świnoujście go back to the early Middle Ages. The first provisional fortifications were built by Pomeranian princes, then the Danes and Swedes, and the permanent fortifications decided to build Prussians after the armed conflict with Denmark in 1849. From 1848, the officer responsible for the construction of the fortress was Captain Eickstädt from the Corps of Engineers. The port was blocked by the Danish fleet in 1864, and in 1870 by the French fleet. None of the armies decided to try to enter the port. At the same time, the Prussian war port was expanding. During World War I, it was the base of the imperial navy, but no fighting was fought here. In the interwar period and during World War II, the largest Krigsmarine base in the Baltic was located here, whose members were evacuated west in 1945. After the war, Soviet soldiers were stationed in the forts, then they were transformed into tourist facilities, testifying to the city's defensive traditions. The fortress consisted of four forts, of which three have survived to our times. These are: - Angel's Fort - Gerhard's Fort - West Fort The fourth work was Fort II in Warszów, destroyed in the 1970s.
